Synopsis

“Collagist Concoctions” is a joint exhibition between artists Ang Ping Ping and Chen Ziwei. The exhibition introduces a mixed-media style – the combination of collage and painting into subject matters about representation and interpretation of everyday social life and memory of Singaporeans. Presented by two female artists, it showcases works that depict a woman artist’s way of seeing, interpreting and expressing her thoughts and feelings about the people and places that has affected her. In effect contributing to the current body of art by women artists in Singapore.

Despite working in similar medium, works of each artist is distinctive. Each of their styles exudes a unique character through the choice of collage material used, the manner in which collage and painting are incorporated, and the selection of subject matter. Ping Ping paints in water-soluble oils and composes her works based on subjects of nature and family, whereas Ziwei paints in acrylic and creates works based on sites of memory that she represents as symbols.

The artists

Ang Ping Ping graduated from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 1996 and University Of Central England (Birmingham) in 2001. In 2009, She had her 1st Solo Exhibition “Life Moments – Bliss” at Fill-Your-Walls Gallery and had previously participated in various group shows. While working as an interior designer previously, she continued to participate in art activities and was awarded recognitions from the Philip Morris Asean Art Competition in 1998 and Singapore Art Exhibition in 1995. An important contributing factor to her artistic career was a year (2004) of travelling to various parts of China from Beijing to Tibet. During that same year, she lectured at the University of Inner Mongolia School of Design, before she decided to pursue her artistic career on a full-time basis upon returning to Singapore. She is presently a partner of MyArtSpace and continues exploring the possibilities of working layers of multiple components into her 2 dimensional visual artworks.

Ziwei is a recent graduate from the National University of Singapore where she did a major in Geography and minor in Southeast Asian studies. Prior to her tertiary education, she completed “Art and Design” in her ‘A’ levels. She continued her art practice during university and showcased her works in various platforms such as Noise Singapore and Singapore Art Street. In addition, she has participated in group exhibitions with Fill-Your-Walls Gallery, Post- Museum and Evil Empire Gallery. Her subject matter is partially influenced by the concepts of her discipline where she interprets and represents landscapes and people based on Geographical elements of time and space. She was also an administrator with the art society “Singapore Contemporary Young Artists (SCYA)”. She will be pursuing a degree in Fine Art and History of Art at Goldsmiths, University of London in end September 2010.

3. Meet the artists at the ballot drawing on 12 June, 3 pm – 6 pm.
4. Ballot numbers are randomly drawn, and you get to choose any available artwork. The earlier your ballot is drawn, the more choice you have!

I’ll be putting up other works-mainly sketches (in digital prints) on sale in the viewing gallery so if you like you can have a look and purchase them. In addition, I will be present during the ballot on the 12th, Saturday from 3-6pm. Hope to see you there!

Coming this September I’ll be embarking on a new journey towards “Fine Art and History of Art” (finally, after three long years of keeping my promise to get that basic degree). My new home will be in the South-east of London, Goldsmiths University. Adventure awaits me.

My work ‘Lily’ is a representation of my mother whose name is also Lily. She has been my chosen role model for this exhibition, which is a showcase of works in conjunction with International Women’s Day. Most of my sketches were found in the main showcase on Level 3, whilst the shoes that I designed and another work were in a display booth on level 1, just outside Tommy Hilfiger.
